Unfinished Stuff

I make a serious effort to paint every single day. Sometimes I cannot, but I start right back up whenever I can. I mostly work evening shifts selling electronics and electronic accessories which makes finding time to paint more and more difficult to come by. I usually can only find one or two hours to work on something. Usually I'm so stressed out about going to work in a hour or so I don't have time to calm down and think of a good idea or polish an old one.

So, which leads me to this blog post. These are just a FEW of the things I found over the past six months that I've left unfinished. I cropped and made them a little more presentable. But, I can't help but feeling I ought to start finishing things. I've got this "habit" where I feel done with something just as I think it up or scribble it on paper. I don't know if I'm lazy but I'm for sure getting bored quickly of my own ideas.

Enough ranting,

The above is just a corner of a larger picture. I think I can get more success if I can stay out detailing a painting. Iadmire the techniques where the entire painting is worked on rather than piece by piece. Those techniques take a lot of discipline which I'm still trying to find.

This is looking way cooler than when I last saw it. I've got the biggest crush and skulls. I've got an even bigger crush on jack-o-lantern style glowing things.

Another frustration I have is getting the painting out of order. I'm putting "opaque" paint down before the drawing is even done. My hierarchy in my brain is scrambled. . . this is probably where my sloppiness comes from.
I like this one a lot. I started out a 50X50 pixel canvas and I enlarged it and started to tighten. I don't know why I never finished this one.

You know when you think you've got a good idea but you didn't plan ahead to make it succeed. The above is that! Again! Which only makes it. . . a kind of decent thumbnail painting.

Going back to my roots here. It seems if I use certain tools I automatically revert to my "anime" days. I'd rather refer to the "anime style" as an "anime canon". It's humurous how readily it is replused. I think people can "smell" imitation and shortcuts so maybe that's why. I've been told by so many artists about what style is or is not that I don't think it really exists. Like "graphic arts" and "jogging" don't exist.

Anyway, I'd like to address the above painting as an issue of scale I guess. I like the large eyes and baby-like proportions much the same way dolls are laid out. Dolls are formed as simplfied humans right? I espiecally like when on a doll there a zipper or a seam which is regular scale on a tiny doll. The hair is another example of scale. A whole paint stroke can't be the thickness of one hair but, on a doll it could be. I seem to remember in that Alla Prima book he was painting dolls. Perhaps for the same reasons above. I ought to read that book more. He's full of that kind of hard work and guts discipline.

When I first decided to choose the ruinous powers over the guardsman, I considered a Nurgle army. There was a great appeal to force that would lumber forward under massive gunfire and could not be stopped. Plague marines are deathless, still rotting in their armour, shrug off the worst of wounds with ease. All are welcome to join the jovial ranks of Grandfather Nurgle. Perhaps I just wasn't ready for all the conversions.

No stealth, trickery, sorcery, or even firepower compares to the grinding force of the chainaxe. Few things satisfy a chaos enthusist more than a land raider dumping ten berzerkers onto doomed foe. There are so many attacks in the assault that I have to roll an entire box of dice and them some.

Oh, Bolt Thrower lieks these guys too. Almost as much as they liek mudkips.

This is what happens when you "stay the course". What leads me to this conclusion? When you say to me, "maybe you ought to finish this. You know? Clean it up?" it's too likely I will. Tell me to paint over something, I probably will. I can't believe this painting used to look like this!

My inspiration for this and other painting "theory": Kawa Yoo. Something about the painting under the painting is very intriguing. I'm fascinated with burying a picture with a picture. And then burying that picture with another picture.

If you'd like to see my BFA show it's at the Woodbury Art Museum at the University Mall in Orem, Utah. It's somewhere on the 2nd floor in between the Nordstrom and The Gap. But I was just doing a colour study. Or course I tweaked and exaggerated. With these poorly designed blue stripes. No but where's there's one. . . there's more, right?

Super busy recently. I actually should be doing working on the Cougar's engine right now but I've decided to update this blog. Lucky you! Starting with Church drawings. Top right is probably the nicest drawing I've ever done in my opinion. Though my opinion is easily swayed. As I have fallen in with the ruinous powers (nudge nudge)
So it appears that the forces of Chaos will become a permanent fixture here. Done on Friday the thirteenth. That web address on there I might visit some time. It was supposed to be a good cure all or something.
Part of an expirement. Ahh~
Church. Testimony meeting gets to draw fast. Unless they get wordy. Which the better drawings were probably the wordier people. And a nice braid.
So I was looking through my OLD drawings. Like the 1998 Japanimationesque drawings. I sure tried really hard. Anyway, I had all this scrap paper in there with like. . . one tiny drawing on it. So I took all that paper out and put in into my "draw on this paper" pile. So I was basically taking those tiny lame head and making them 'current'. It's cool because I knew what I was trying to do.

This head is darling! I don't think I meant to draw kids but I think that they look like them. And ruinous powers again.

Dart! This surprised me. It was like Ray Charles shot eye beams at me.

It's a great tradition to paint people skipping around in the woods. The theme of this piece was to use the hard pencil. Which I'm liking more than gradated tools. Me thinks it stems from oekaki days. I have a horrible feeling that's going to make a violent come back. The other theme was warm or cool or die. Mostly dying. . . this took me more than a days study. Which is too long for taste. . . add salt for taste.

Saturday is a special day

A huge track-hoe in the decimated land where the Geneva Steel plant once was. It was behind a chain link fence is surprisingly easy to paint through. The colours aren't as accurate as I want them to be, but I still think this piece is very successful.

An old truck out in Vineyard, Utah. Painted on site. Much closer than going out to Spring City or Wellsville. We're on a never ending hunt for old and also maybe abandoned things to paint. With good light, colour, and shadows of course.

Never thought I'd be caught painting flowers, particularly Irises. But, I had fun doing it and I might in the future do it again. Maybe. It was challenging to describe planes as the light changed. But as long as I stuck to the warm and cool colour combos, I'd make it through. The end.

I did a study. I took me five measely hours. I used photashop and photashop alone. I used a ref. Now that I look at it. . . the light was very bad. But I liked the ha-nands and the colours in the face.

Stake conference! So I had the great idea to draw the ENTIRE CHOIR! After you've been drawing models for 3+ hours and painting landscapes for 5+ hours, you realize that two hours to draw something isn't enough time. So, it's speed. Holy moly speed. Speaking of speed, I didn't realize how fast those meetings go. It was liking they were singing at me or I was singing or they were preaching and people would stand in the way so. . . don't underestimate how lively and crazy these meetings are. Kids rolling around and you couldn't stop it.

Pleinairasaurus Day

I've been away on a pleinair tour of duty. The extent of my campaign went from the Siege of Wellsville, the Stalemate of Spring City, and the bloody Battle for Kolob Canyon. Despite high painting causality rate, we were mightily victorious! Hail to my wingmen and to our mighty benefactors!

The bad-A church. More than hundred years old (Europeans snickering. You know it.)

A transcendental truck in the dimensional rift in opened in Spring City. I can't even describe what it was like. Post apocalyptic spirit world. I came second away from discovering my spirit animal. Does the truck look white? ~ I dunno.

I pretty much made this a cartoon of something so magnificent that you really can't. . . never mind. You'll have just have to see it for yourself.

EDIT: I fixed the photos. Now they are better than they were.

Finals are over. I have a week grace period to do nothing but awesome. Did I do I do that? Do I ever not do that? Or at least try? On with the non-sense.

Thomas the Deep Frying Robot is making a return. I don't know when or how but this is the fatal beginnings of it. Watch as Autmn, Heather, and Thomas roll the mark of the beast and are scared to wits end by Alfred the Lucky Spider. I'm sure we'll get more frybread and definitely more ninjas. More to come.
Drawing in church. I'm getting good at sitting where I can see people. At least the front of them. Only small likenesses this time around. It was awkward. Some of them I just plain jacked up. Speaking of jacked up. I got to replace the clutch on my brother's car last Saturday!

We got this cool transmission jack (that red thing with wheels) to ease our woes. We didn't bother taking that exhaust pipe off. We didn't want to dealt with drilling out rusty bolts. So we beat around it until we got the transmission out. I had fun reaching into tight places and turning bolts I couldn't see. No bolt can hide from my long skinny arms.

The old one and the new one. I have a morbid fascination at how worn out the parts will get on machines. I would have loved to show you the rotors and brakes on my truck a while back but I didn't think to take a pictures then. Holy moly.
Whoa, ridges. Anyway, I felt I needed to share that experience. I'm pretty much sore everywhere. I even got a good nap under the car on the garage floor. We've got most of it put back together. We've got a few hours before it's drivable.

I finally found a Niji Waterbrush. So I loaded it with Sumi-e and did some lame stuff.

Spacekimos from memory with the niji pen. Falcoon is responsible for the zipper crazy. Gotta draw every tooth in the zipper. Why? We're crazy.
Wonky stuff. Yes, those are totally 2142 wheels on the VW. And is that the Bodyguard? No she has something coming out of her armpit. What is that!? Lame Lame. . .

All from photos except the girl there. . . she's a church goer. I get a kinda likeness from that kind of drawing. Except I'm going in too small and not looking enough. I should be filling sketchbooks with those kinda drawings instead of getting a half dozen for the whole thing. I need to ride buses more.

Finals project massacre this week. I think I survived the storm surge but I'm in the eye of the storm. Now you'll understand why there's no updates. So I've got some retarded stuff for you to see in the meantime.
Noodle haired keyboardist. I really like this one. Going along my recent tubes and mummy wraps thing. This is totally a church sketch too. I'm starting to draw a crowd there too. I think I might have to start drawing troglodytes to drive them off.

Speaking of which, here's one now. Okay you Dn'D goons, this doesn't look like your traditional troglodyte. More like. . .buena vista SLC gator. A little more roofy poofy painted backgrounds and I'm Spiderman. (Sorry If I totally offend the locals. What'll fix that is if I can finally meet you in person. Cause. . . right now everyone's a nebulous mass.)

A low week in the semester. I'm drawing like mad but I'm not seeing any work. You know the feeling? Seriously, I'm suppose to be drawing comps and I draw this. This is like. . . everything I ever draw ever. They're everywhere! I think I can get away with that. And I do.

I assume I can just take pictures with my camera phone and get away with posting those. It is some what apparent that it is working. I'm still devising my photographing rig. Until then, keep both pant legs secure.

A gesture! Yay. The rest of the figure drawings from this class a sneak into turned out as horrible pictures. So, I'll have to photograph them with camera awesome instead of camera not awesome. I liked it so I posted it.

So I went to the No Fear tour concert at this forsaken place out at the Great Salt Lake, The Great Saltair. Seriously! It's surreal like Half-Life 2 out there. I could've sworn I saw some antlions and headcrabs out there. I took this awesome sunset picture there.

Yeah, as you may have guessed, we went all the way out there just to see Dragonforce! It was worth every penny and every fist fight.

The walkers today just aren't like they used to be. With 'mecha' around, there are no real 'mechs'. Man, I miss the mech days. Wait, did they ever leave?Ten minutes with china marker.

If you're going to make the eyes far apart, make sure it looks like you did it on purpose.

Gun turtle and toilet. To me it isn't random. To me it isn't absurd. There's a level of absurdity that I haven't attained yet. It's like, you can't tell how spicy it is until you've built up some kind of tolerance. And I can throw a meatloaf far. . . far over the mountain. Next you'll be thinking I've copied an entire anatomy book in a night. Don't believe it. I started just like everyone else. . .with stick men.
